LOOKING AHEAD...A PREVIEW OF OUR ANNUAL REUNION IN 2010
Griswold Family Reunion, August 5-7, 2010
Reunion HQ: The Park Plaza Hotel, 4460 West 78th Street Circle, Bloomington, MN
55435
Telephone: 952-831-3131: www.parkplaza.com/bloomingtonmn
We have a very generous agreement with the hotel for the 2010 reunion. The great
thing is that for about 2 weeks before and after the event we have the SAME RATE
for the hotel rooms. The rates are single for $95 per night, double for $105 and
suite for $125. A cot brought into the room is $10 per STAY not per night! It is
important to understand that these are ROOM rates and not additional for extra
people. Be sure to ask for the Griswold Family rate when you make a reservation:
discounted car rentals are available locally through the hotel.
The events thus far are to have a bus tour of the Twin Cities on Friday for
$63-65 for a 7.5 hour tour which includes lunch and a tour of the James J. Hill
mansion in St. Paul. Hill built the Great Northern Rail Road and he is the only
one who built a rr withOUT any government funding for land or the rr.!!!! We
will also tour the Lakewood Cemetery which has 36 GRISWOLDs buried there. We
will have tour guide from the cemetery take us through there. VP Hubert Humphrey
is also buried there as is Tiny Tim! We will also have a photo op at Minnehaha
Falls.
On Saturday we will have our breakfast annual meeting and the banquet in the
evening. The afternoon is set aside to have events where we will get to know one
another better, I have a speaker coming in to give us a talk about what the
GRISWOLDS encountered when they landed in American and what sort of Native
population they would have met and interacted with the first few years here. The
speaker will also give us a bit of the history of MN and what the early hears
were like for the pioneers GRISWOLDS who came to MN. I'm working on another
speaker for the day who can tell us about the GRISWOLDs who built at least 5
home on Nicollet Island in the heart of downtown Minneapolis in the middle of
the Mississippi River!
On Sunday we will have another tour of about 4-5 hours to visit Nicollet Island
and see the above mentioned home and take a boat tour through lock and dam
number one of the Mississippi River. While on this boat tour you will see the
newly built I35@ bridge which is rebuilt since the collapse, the Guthrie
Theater, downtown Minneapolis, the river front, and before the boat trip enjoy
lunch at the Nicollet Island Inn on the Island.
Besides the Griswold reunion events people may wish to do various other things
in the area. If I know ahead of time who wants to see Mall of America...you
really should go at least once! we can get FREE rides from the hotel to the Mall
and back. The hotel makes three trips per day to and from the Mall. You have
free transportation from the airport to the hotel from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m each day
on the hour. If you let the Hotel know about your schedule when you book your
room you may get even better service.
The hotel has a pool and workout room and jacuzzi and a restaurant. If you would
like to do any genealogy work before the event the MN Genealogical Society (MGS)
library is open Wed and Thurs and Wednesday evening. If you let me know you want
to do this I will work on transportation. It is $10 per day for doing research
there or $35 for a membership per individual and then the library use is free.
Check their website...just google MnGS.
If there is something you really want to see in this area please let me know as
I'm still setting up the Sunday tour and the Saturday schedule. But the above is
what I have thus far. Bring cameras and expect to have a great time. If you need
childcare let me know about that as I may be able to arrange that also as I used
to do daycare and know lots of providers! If yo want information about anything
in this area let me know and I'll try to get it for you! There are many things
to do here and it is a great family vacation destination. I may be able to get
discounts for various local events. We have many world renown theaters and
restaurants here. Just let me hear from you about what you want to do here.
