Wethersfield author Thomas Tryon wrote two books about two feuding families, the Talcott's and Grimes'. The titles are: The Wings of the Morning and Fire of Spring. The Talcott's are the Buck's and I believe the Grimes' are the Griswold's. Of course, everything is all mixed up and changed around to make a good story. Tryon looked at places and people and wove his impressions into the tale. For example, Prudence Crandall, a famous abolitionist from Canterbury, Connecticut, is Georgiana Ross, a lead character in the novel. My grandfather, John Saltonstall Buck is definitely, Old Bobby Talcott in the book; my dad, John Webster Buck, is "Pagan" Appleton Talcott; and I, having been an arrogant young man in my earlier years, am Priam. Mill Woods is Grimes Mill. Our old homestead (where my wife, Virginia, and I now live - what's left of it) is definitely Folly Brook Farm, with many of the items found in the house and on the property described in the book, including the "Summer House", recently painted by artist Bob Noriega and on display in our reconstructed barn http://www.oldbuckfarm.blogspot.com. I am trying to place Burning Bush Farm. It could be the farm on the east side of Griswold Road in Wethersfield that overlooks Mill Woods Park. Was this once owned by the Griswold family? What is now the First Church Parsonage is the house built by Appleton Talcott in the story, but I don't know much of it's actual history. Marsh Street is March Street, and so on. Very interesting stuff. Tryon is an incredible author. Having had classical training as an actor, he knows all the tricks and his books make excellent reads. The two books listed above were to be part of a trilogy. Unfortunately Tryon died before writing the third that would have told a resolution of the feud between the two families.
