The Robert French & Esther Griswold French Research Grant for Genealogy

The GFA funded an exhibit installed in Wethersfield by the Griswoldville Preservation Association. The display features graphics that convey the history of water-powered mills in Griswoldville.  One panel is on display in the Wethersfield Museum on the first floor of the Kinney Memorial Cultural Center.  The second panel is in the Town Library.  One outdoor sign is located near the walkway to Mill Woods Park off Griswold Road.  The water-powered grist and fulling mills operated in the early 1700’s and later knitting, weaving and edge tool mills operated into the 20th century.

The Griswold Family Association sponsors a research grant program, which was created in honor of our retired genealogists, Esther and Robert French.  The Robert French & Esther Griswold French Research Grant for Griswold Family Genealogy & History is available by application for GFA members, other than our paid genealogical staff, who seek funds to research specific topics and need some financial assistance.  A Grant Committee will review applications and award funds.  Funds can be requested for travel expenses (excluding meals), fees for use of materials, copying, and so on, and research results will be published in the GFA Bulletin. Copied documentation will be submitted to the GFA archives.

Suggested topics: Canadian Griswolds and links to the US Griswold families; the many variations, sources and family links to Griswold Coat of Arms; Griswolds in the Revolutionary War; Griswolds in the Civil War; a helpful project would be to assign reference numbers to all Griswolds listed in the 1850 census which could be listed in our data base for cross reference. This is just to get you started: any reasonable research request will be considered!
