Unknown Griswolds
Can you identify these gentlemen? Are the tin types images of Francis?
Are they both of Francis at different ages? Is one Francis and one Abel or
are they siblings of Francis, i.e. John Wesley Griswold?
The reference to "Springfield" in the tin type is likely to
be Springfield, IL because Francis lived in Chicago and was listed in the
1880 Census
If you can supply clues to the identity of these gentlemen,

The tin
types were found with other photographs and documents by the descendants of
Alice Elmina Griswold. She was born in Chicago in 1878 to Francis and
Anna Jane Griswold. Francis's paternal lineage is Abel, Shubael, Roger,
Joseph, Joseph, Edward, George. She lived in the Seattle area from
about 1898 to 1957 when she moved to Southern California. Her last address
was Long Beach, CA. |
| Response from one GFA member: The top photo
looks like one I feel like I have seen before, and because I know that my
great grandfather, Henry Farnham Griswold, also lived in Chicago at that
time. Most of my information about my great grandfather is from a copy of
his obituary in a 1908 issue of the San Diego Union. He had retired there,
but it says that he lived in Chicago from the 1860's to 1892. He was a
businessman who ran wholesale tea and spice business, and was once burned
out by the great Chicago fire. I know also that he was the son of a Joseph
Andrew Griswold, but, unfortunately, the obituary and other information that
I have does not tell if he had any siblings. |
The owner has identified one of these men as Francis
Asbury Griswold, based on comparison with other photos |
